As I went to Claire’s office the next day, I recognized that I was seeing a new side to Claire. Last night she was the consummate professional as she interviewed me. In charge. In control. Making me feel more comfortable about it all than I had feared.

Her confidence was seductive, oh yes! Working with her meant I would have to see more of this side of her.

She had just placed an engagement document in front of me to formalize the assignment of attorney.

"Please sign this. It authorizes the attorney assignment and lets Henry and his team know you are passing all the working papers to me," she directed, sounding all serious and professional in an instant.

Then she passed me a second document and suggested I read it through in case I had any questions.

I read.

What the hell?! What the fuck is this about?

I looked up at Claire.

Claire was the only one I believed could stand up to Peterson, but making me sign such a hands-off-me agreement? Just a tad bit extreme!

I asked her, “Is this what I think it is? We have begun a relationship—a very nice personal relationship—and now we have to suspend it?”

"Do you want me to be your lawyer or not? You have a choice, as do I. Sleeping with a client is 100% off-limits for me. It’s a matter of my code of ethics. No sleeping with clients. So, yes. It is what you think. From this moment and for as long as I represent you, you are O.F.F. Limits to me. I am O.F.F. Limits to you," Claire spelled it out.

I gazed at her. She seemed dead serious about not taking the case if I didn't sign.

"Claire, we are both adults. I don't see a reason why I should sign such a document," I protested.

You know you are protesting too much. You know you are going to give in.

Yeah, I do. But a little game-playing goes both ways.

"Because we are both adults is all the more reason why we should have a contract that binds us both to acting like the professionals we are," she insisted.

It was so pleasant to hear a woman speak with such ease and confidence to me. Most women just groveled at my feet. God! The men too, now that I think about it. How refreshing to have someone speak to me as an equal.

I remembered how I had truly enjoyed our conversations in the car and at my house on our Rookie Auction Date night.
